Social Studies

Malory Alimario 8B

In Social Studies we are now learning about the people in Mesopotamia, the Sumerians. The Sumerians as we have learned have a very wide variety of food choices. They had things like, fruit, wheat and barley, fish, date palms, honey, and chick peas. To prepare their land for growing crops they would plough the land with bronze blades and would irrigate the land with water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Many rich people lived very close to the Temenos, which is the city center, because they have jobs that are very close here.

In the previous unit, we learnt about the Mesolithic and Neolithic times, and what kind of lifestyles people had. The people in Neolithic times were sedentary, which was caused by farming and harvesting. The people in the Mesolithic times, though, were the first ones to discover harvesting, and they harvested things like wheat and barley. Not many people during these times knew about harvesting, so they weren’t as sedentary and were still nomadic.  In the Neolithic times, the first civilization known was Jericho which was located now in Israel 10 000 years ago. It was known by most people by its 8 meter high wall surrounding the land. This is what we have been learning in Social Studies.

Today I will be talking about our first tryout we had for basketball. This year there was about 20 girls who tried it. Most of them were grade 6 girls and I don’t think any of them made it to competitive except for Alyica. Monday we will be having our final tryout and from those results our coaches will pick who belongs to competitive and who needs to improve and those girls will be sent to developmental. This year Mrs. Sosnowski is the competitive coach and I don’t know the teachers name who’s coaching developmental.

I think that the 2 teams will be strong this year because there are students with skills and are really good. At the tryouts we did the three man weave. The three man weave helps us pass the ball straight to our teammates and run faster. We also worked footwork like pivoting. To be honest  the tryouts were not that hard but for new players,it was hard.

Developmental Volleyball

Developmental Volleyball Tournament
In November the developmental girls played at home for our volleyball tournament. Almost all the girls showed up to play. We played three games altogether. Between each game we had an hour to rest or do whatever (Homework etc…) our serving, bumping, and setting was the best we played all season.
The teams we played were Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. Gerard, and Linden Christian. The first game was against St. Gerard and we won the first set but lost the second two. In the second game we played Immaculate Heart of Mary and lost the first set came back and won the second set but then again lost the third set. Our last game against Linden Christian we won all three sets with our serving. Good job girls!

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day:

Remembrance day is a time of praying for and honoring all the soldiers who died giving up their lives for us. Men and women all around the world had fought for the rights of their people and for the freedom of us people. As a sign that we are truly thankful, we wear poppies. Poppies were chosen as a symbol because it was the only other living thing that survived the war. It grew naturally over war grounds and it brought hope and colour to wars.

Science Project

Science Project

Today I will be writing about our science project. For science we had to make a boat that could float and hold a certain amount of weights. We got an outline for the basics of the boat and the basics for the report. Also with the boat we had to write a report on the boat and what our expectations were with it. The minimum materials we had to use were 3. The testing of the boats will be on Friday, November 22nd. The report is due on Monday, November 25th

S.S Project

In social, we are doing a project on shelter used by the early people. Some of the shelters we can do are stone huts, tipis, caves, and lean-on-to's. The shelter I have chosen is the stone hut. We have to provide information on what were going to make your shelter out of.
We had a choice of working with partners or working by ourselves. My partner is Patrick. The S.S project also has to come with a Real Estate Ad on the selling features of the house including price which is not the money we use today. The contact is not also the way it is today. The Real Estate Ad also can't have the language we use today for example slang. The project will be due on November 20th which will be on Wednesday.
